مهرتي الصغيرة: الصداقة رائعة (or simply مهرتي الصغيرة) is the Arabic dub of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. Originally produced by Neo Productions in Egypt, the dub first premiered on Cartoon Network Arabic on October 6, 2011[1]. Only one season aired on the channel, and the season finale never aired, instead being released digitally. The last aired episode, "Party of One", aired in April 2012, and the show was dropped from rotation in March 2014.

The dub would continue to air on e-Junior, beginning with the second season, in no later than May 2014; the channel is considered the home channel of the dub, premiering most of the episodes first. The series had also premiered on the Spacetoon channel in the same year. Many episodes would infamously be heavily edited, or outright banned from airing on the channel. In season seven, production of the dub moved to Venus Centre in Syria, a company heavily associated with Spacetoon.

The dub completed its run in June 2020 on e-Junior, thus finishing the French dub with it, as the channel provides both English and French audio tracks alongside the Arabic track.

Broadcast[]

مهرتي الصغيرة has aired on many channels, including OSN Kid Zone TV, Gulli Bil Arabi, and Majid Kids TV[2].

Initially, due to Cartoon Network obtaining the rights to season one, no other channels (including Boomerang, which is also owned by Turner) were known to broadcast the first season, only airing from the second and beyond. However, both Gulli Bil Arabi and OSN Kid Zone TV have aired season one episodes since they premiered the show in 2017, as Cartoon Network's rights had expired by then.

Release[]

Arabic episodes have been included on various DVD releases by the British distributor, Clear Vision. This includes the season one finale, "The Best Night Ever", which was skipped for unknown reasons when the show aired on Cartoon Network. Specifically, the episode was made available on the "A Party Pony" DVD release.

The first five seasons of the dub were available to stream on Netflix. Spacetoon Go hosts the ninth season of the dub. The dub was also available on STARZ Play[3].

On October 21, 2021, the official Arabic My Little Pony YouTube channel began uploading full episodes of the dub[4].

Episodes[]

For simplicity reasons, any air dates listed are prioritizing that of the channels which have originally aired them. This pertains to the guide below:

  • Season 1 (except S1E26) – Cartoon Network
    • S1E26 – DVD release by Clear Vision
  • Seasons 2-5 – e-Junior
  • "Best Gift Ever" – OSN Kid Zone TV
  • For any episode missing an air date, as well as nearly every episode past S5E5, the exact air dates, as well as the premier channels, are unknown.

Censorship[]

Because of Islamic broadcast standards, many scenes in episodes were typically censored as they aired on Cartoon Network Arabic and Spacetoon, including those that feature romance. In the case of the latter, a few episodes deliberately did not air on the channel at all, including holiday episodes. The dub is completely uncensored when released on Netflix, YouTube and home video, as well as E-Junior, OSN Kid Zone TV, Gulli Bil Arabi, and Majid Kids TV: no episodes are banned, all cut scenes are retained and the footage is of the original version.

The following cuts refer to the aired Arabic-dubbed prints from Cartoon Network Arabic:

  • In The Show Stoppers, the scene with the piglet that licked Sweetie Belle's dirty back was removed.
  • In Green Isn't Your Color:
    • The whole scene which begins with pincushioned Spike admiring Rarity through Twilight Sparkle warning Spike about his crush being revealed was removed. The aired scene looked like Spike was stating his lack of pain from the needles, and then cut to Photo Finish appearing at Rarity's door.
    • Later in the episode, the whole scene from when Twilight Sparkle revealed Spike's feelings for Rarity through Pinkie Pie's disappointment with the reveal was removed. Despite the latter cut, the scene where Spike states his disappointment in Twilight Sparkle due to breaking her promise was kept, making the ending appear inconsistent with the rest of the episode.
  • In Party of One, the Spike and Rarity scene was removed. It was edited to look as if Pinkie Pie went from Applejack and cut to pop up beside Rarity just before inviting her to the after-party party.

Spacetoon had similar cuts to the aforementioned ones, as well as their own:

  • Episodes are edited to modify Twilight Sparkle's cutie mark - and other instances of six-pointed stars - into a five-pointed star, as they perceive it to look like the Star of David and therefore be "promoting Zionism."
    • One infamous example happens in the episode "Fame and Misfortune". During the song "Flawless", the Mane 6 appear in the reflection of the star on the book; due to the star being there, Applejack was erased from the scene.
  • In the episode "Forever Filly", Twisty Pop is holding up a heart-shaped balloon. This balloon was edited to be an oval, due to the strict disallowing of romantic themes. Despite this, the heart seen on the fountain in the background remains unedited.

Notes[]

  • Prior to the release of the DVDs as published by Clear Vision, none of the episodes in season one had any known official titles in the Arabic dub, as there were no voice-overs reading anything out. Even the series' official title itself remained vague for years.
    • From the second season to the sixth, voice-overs began to be read out for episode titles and the show title itself, giving it the simple title of مهرتي الصغيرة. Although the opening theme retains the same voice-over for the series title, this practice is otherwise dropped beginning season 7, due to the studio change.
  • Seasons 2-6 feature a voice-over reading out who plays who in the credit sequence, while the dubbed "My Little Pony" chorus plays in the background. In the first season, the dubbed chorus was still there but it featured no voice-over. Because of the studio change, in the last few seasons, the credits are instrumental completely.
    • The credits of the show don't air on Spacetoon. Earlier broadcasts had a quick showing of the theme song again, this time instrumental, while later broadcasts have a quick segment where they say what the upcoming episode contains.
  • Likely a byproduct of the dub being produced by SDI Media in seasons 2-6, e-Junior broadcasted the dub with its original NTSC pitch in these seasons, while in season one, the dub aired on the channel with a PAL pitch.
  • Similarly to the Bosnian dub, Majid Kids TV uses a widespread fanmade Arabic logo in their promotional material, which was created by GrandChaos9000 on DeviantArt (and was the second of two attempts at making one), and has a different, directly translated title than the dub itself. Although the logo Majid has used is edited: the order of the two words in the "Friendship Is Magic" part of the logo is switched, so that it says "سحر الصداقة", instead of "الصداقة سحر".
    • The similarly titled مهري الصغير: الصداقة سحر is still used to refer to the dub in official uploads by Hasbro on YouTube.
  • Despite the move to Syria necessitating the voice actors be recast for seasons 7-9, the theme song for the previous Egyptian dub is still used in the Venus Centre-dubbed episodes.
Translations
  • The term "magic" (سحر) is not explicitly used most of the time. The Arabic dub refers to magic mostly as قوة عجيبة ("Amazing power").
  • Winter Wrap Up is referred as إختام فصل الشتاء ("Closure of winter").
  • Cutie marks are referred to as علامات مُميزة ("Special marks").
  • The Cutie Mark Crusaders are referred to as either نادي العلامات المُميزة ("The special marks club") or كويتي مارك كلوب (transliteration of "cutie mark club").
  • Pegasus ponies are referred to as مهور مجنحة ("Winged ponies"), and Unicorn ponies are referred to as مهور وحيد القرن ("Single-horned ponies"), despite the latter having a more specific term in the Arabic language (حريش) that essentially means "unicorn".
  • The Grand Galloping Gala is referred to as مهرجان المملكة الكبير ("The kingdom's grand festival").
  • In some episodes, Diamond Tiara is referred to simply as تيارا ("Tiara").
